Fullerene-like models for microporous carbon

چکیده
Microporous carbons are important in a wide variety of applications, ranging from pollution control to supercapacitors, yet their structure at the molecular level is poorly understood. Over the years, many structural models have been put forward, but none has been entirely satisfactory in explaining the properties of the carbons. The discovery of fullerenes and fullerene-related structures such as carbon nanotubes gave us a new perspective on the structure of solid carbon, and in 1997 it was suggested that microporous carbon may have a structure related to that of the fullerenes. Recently, evidence in support of such a structure has been obtained using aberration-corrected transmission electron microscopy, electron energy loss spectroscopy and other techniques. This article describes the development of ideas about the structure of microporous carbon, and reviews the experimental evidence for a fullerene-related structure. Theoretical models of the structural evolution of microporous carbon are summarised, and the use of fullerene-like models to predict the adsorptive properties of microporous carbons are reviewed.

High - resolution Electron Microscopy Studies of a Microporous Carbon produced by Arc - evaporation
The soot produced as a byproduct of fullerene synthesis by arc-evaporation consists of a microporous carbon with a surface area, after activation with carbon dioxide, of ca. 700 m2 g-’. Here, we investigate the structure of this material, and its appearance after electron irradiation and high-temperature heat treatment, using highresolution electron microscopy. We show that the heat treatment t...

A plausible model for the structure of non-graphitizing carbon is one which consists of curved, fullerene-like fragments grouped together in a random arrangement. Although this model was proposed several years ago, there have been no attempts to calculate the properties of such a structure. Here, we determine the density, pore size distribution and adsorption properties of a model porous carbon...

The adsorption of gases on microporous carbons is still poorly understood, partly because the structure of these carbons is not well known. Here, a model of microporous carbons based on fullerene-like fragments is used as the basis for a theoretical study of Ar adsorption on carbon. First, a simulation box was constructed, containing a plausible arrangement of carbon fragments. Next, using a ne...

Transmission electron microscopy has been used to examine carbon isolated from the Allende meteorite. The structure of the carbon is rather disordered, consisting of curved and faceted graphene sheets with little large scale graphitization, and resembles that of a microporous carbon following high temperature heat treatment. Closed carbon nanoparticles, typically V2^10 nm in diameter are common...
متن کاملHigh-resolution electron microscopy of a microporous carbon
The structure of a microporous carbon prepared by the carbonization of sucrose was examined using high-resolution electron microscopy. It was found to be disordered and isotropic and primarily made up of tightly curved individual carbon layers, enclosing pores typically about 1 nm in size. Completely closed carbon particles were also present. These observations suggest that the carbon may have ...
